H1N1Influenza (Swine flu) and Down Syndrome
"H1N1 Influenza (Swine flu) is now pandemic and many cases are occurring across the world including Ireland. In most cases, the illness is mild and people are recovering quickly.
People with Down syndrome may be at greater risk of developing a more severe infection or complications if they contract H1N1 flu. Those recognised as being at high risk include people with haemodynamically significant heart disease, chronic kidney, lung, or liver disease, diabetes or those who have weaker immune systems, as well as children under 5 years of age. Many people with Down syndrome will be included in these categories, and therefore should receive the H1N1 vaccine as soon as it is available. They may be considered for preventive therapy if they have been in close contact with the infection and are not vaccinated. Early treatment with antiviral drugs (Tamiflu) should be given if they develop symptoms of the disease.
If you have any concerns contact your GP or other health professionals who are already involved in the persons care"
